At a tryst beside an old pit they hear voices, and the musketeer descends, follows a subterranean passage and overhears three courtiers plotting against the king. He vanquishes the trio in a hard-fought battle and secures their incriminating documents. The king rewards him with the title of Duke, which enables him to wed the girl of his choice.
