However, his troubles now begin, for his wife wants new clothes, each of his children want new duds, he ruins his new straw hat under the lawn-mower, the cook tackles him in the kitchen for a new hat and, when Spender heaves a bottle at her head in rage, she mauls him good and kicks him out. The hour for leaving arrives and the whole family gathers in the library, clad in their new raiment, only to be met by Spender, who shows them he has spent all his money before they have even started.
