They labor hard on the harsh land digging for valuable kauri gum and discover it is a strange lawless frontier dominated by Farland, a cruel and sadistic British criminal. Farland's torment of the nearby Maori camp and its leader Tamati has created trauma and tension between all cultures. The unsolved murder of Tamati's wife has left him lost, unhinged with grief, and distant from his sister Pania. Tamati's deranged state forms a mystical connection with Luka's dead father, and Tamati pulls Luka from certain death. With the Croatian camp and its men destroyed by flood, Pania cares for weak Luka and collects his camp's hidden gold. This sets in motion a perilous and nail-biting set of events as Farland and his men become murderously desperate for the gold. With the same harsh beauty and isolation of 'The Revenant', the thriller plot of 'Tarara' uses the bond of survival against colonial frontier greed to powerfully capture an audiences' emotions.
