In 2005, President Pierre Nkurunziza, a former rebel leader, came to power and overtime began to rule with increasingly authoritarian methods. In 2015, his re-election for a third term, which was not provided for in the constitution, fueled protests, during which there was an attempted coup. The government unleashed an extremely harsh crackdown, resulting in hundreds of deaths and refugees. See less
