HEM OF MEMORY, ...See moreThe video, HEM OF MEMORY, is one of a series of film art works drawn from the feature film drama, IL CONTRATTO, directed by Giorgio Mangiamele, in Melbourne in the early 1950's and left unfinished with a mute soundtrack. HEM OF MEMORY, brings together fragmented silent scenes from the archived film source, with excerpts from a 2008 video interview with Halina Kisilevsky - who played the female lead role of Claudia - viewing the film for the first time on a television screen, and a narrating voice written by poet, Hazel Smith. The interweaving of narrative fragments from the film source, hold on to this rather precarious balance between word and image, like a séance, conjuring a sense of bringing things together that have been kept apart for too long. The sound collage includes traces of found audio, wedded to the original 'mute' reversal film print of IL CONTRATTO and subsequently excluded during the restoration of the film by the National Film and Sound Archive. The interplay of past and present, of remembering and forget, in HEM OF MEMORY, refashions a narrative, with new images, sounds and voices, as a cinematic gesture to the silent memory of the film's future in remembering forward to the poetical film vision of Mangiamele's later films.
