Designed by an unknown engineer, the pit is a complex hole with timber crosspieces every ten feet deep. At the 100 foot level was found a stone with a cryptic inscription: "Forty feet below two million pounds are buried." But, when diggers go below 100 feet, the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean rush in to fill the pit.
