A young man leaves home for Palestine to fight under Richard the Lion Heart. In the battle, he is wounded and falls captive to the Turkish commander, who orders his eyes to be put out. Blind, and a slave, he toils in the quarries for many years, but at last is released, and by painful stages finds his way back to the old home. But he has been thought to be dead, and his betrothed has married another man. It is her little child who gives the poor blind man a drink of water in the courtyard, and when he realizes the truth, he determines to go away without telling anyone who he is.
