This sorrow finally leads to the death of his mother, while his father lingers on broken-hearted. Later a man is discovered seriously wounded and taken to the hospital, where he informs the gendarmes that he has been robbed by a man who he left for dead. The assailant proves to be the wayward son. Despite this overwhelming calamity, the old father does not shirk his duty, but goes to arrest his offspring. Every proof of his crime is found upon the prisoner and he is condemned to imprisonment. Meanwhile, the father, brooding in his home, determines to commit suicide. In this, however, he is prevented by the entrance of his chief, who, reminding him of his duty to the service, leads him to the prison cell. Entering, the chief shows him the prisoner, and offers him the alternative of committing suicide or being shot. With the courage of despair, the prisoner grapples with the chief, but the latter throwing him off, shoots him. The father enters at this denouement and thus closes the career of an infamous son.
