Some years as many as 100,000 lives have been lost. The channel keeps changing on account of the constant rise and fall of the tide. The junks must be towed through the ravines, by means of a line from the top of the mast to the shore, pulled by from twenty to one hundred and fifty men. The bare feet of these men have worn deep grooves in the rock. Every available foot of land along the river is cultivated by the villagers of the little villages which line the banks.
