While the husband is busily engaged about the house, a gypsy woman kidnaps the child. The mother very quickly returns, and is horrified upon discovering her loss. They both dash out in search, and accidentally come upon a band of gypsies making for the hills with their captive. The husband springs upon them, and receives a knife in the back, and is thrust over a precipice. The wife stands roofed to the spot, while the gypsies make away. Stunned by the tragedy she has just witnessed, following so suddenly upon the loss of her offspring, her mind gives way, and she falls helpless to the ground, Raising herself with difficulty, she utters a heartrending shriek, and dashes off aimlessly in pursuit-a wild, demented and pathetic figure. Throughout, the acting of the woman is magnificent. Fifteen years after we come to the lair of the Gitanos; the infant is just developing into womanhood. Two of the band are in love with her. She is coquetting and dancing in turn, when a weird, disheveled figure joins the throng. Instinctively the girl is drawn towards her mother. Maddened by the girl's indifference, one of her lovers raises his knife and plunges it in the girl's shoulder. The action seems to stir a chord in the mother's brain; her vision gradually becomes clearer, and when she realizes at length that the girl is not fatally wounded she bursts into a flood of tears. Her mind is restored to her, and she suddenly recognizes in the girl the infant she had nursed at her breast. Written by The Bioscope - March 11, 1909 See less
