At the same time Paul ...See moreAllan Newell, rector of the fashionable St. Paul's Church, informs Paul Gilbert, a rising young minister, that he, Newell, is planning a trip abroad and would like Gilbert to succeed him as rector of St. Paul's. At the same time Paul Gilbert receives a letter from a friend asking him to occupy the pulpit at Seamen's Bethel, located in the slums of the great city. The Rev. Gilbert is in love with Alice Morgan, sister of Harold Morgan, and he is torn betwixt the ambition to occupy the fashionable church and what he believes to be his duty in the Master's cause, namely, to take charge of the humble Bethel. Finally he informs his betrothed that he will decline the rectorship of St. Paul's and devote his life to the seamen's mission. "You cannot expect me to follow you into the slums," exclaims Alice, and she breaks the engagement. Down near the Seamen's Bethel Nell Gail, an orphan, is the owner of the "Oasis" salon. She accidentally meets Harold Morgan, who falls in love with the girl. In the meantime Paul Gilbert has plunged into his works among the rough seamen and the benefits of his labors in the Master's vineyard are shown when the "Oasis" saloon loses much of its income. When Morgan visits the saloon in hopes of meeting Nell Gail he becomes involved in a game of cards. One of the players is caught cheating. A shot rings out and the man falls lifeless. Morgan is arrested, charged with murder. At the trial it appears that Harold Morgan is to be convicted of murder. Bill Boyle, a waterfront bully, as the trial progresses, endeavors to escape from the city and is injured from a fall from a freight car. Taken to the hospital, he confesses that he is the real slayer of the man in the saloon. He writes a note to Paul Gilbert confessing that he did the deed. The Rev. Gilbert arrives with the note just in time to have the trial postponed for further investigation of Boyle's confession. It is later found to be the truth. Alice Morgan finally realizes that she loves Paul Gilbert. She is also grateful because of his friendship to her brother in time of need. Ultimately there is a double wedding in which Harold Morgan and Nell Gail and Alice Morgan and Paul Gilbert take the matrimonial vow. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
