The thirty recruits arrive, except Alan Brown, who is retained by court procedures; all are volunteers and social reject 'bad lads', most with a criminal record, reason for his inseparable twin and partner in (real) crime Luke to misbehave provocatively, and nearly drop out. One lad takes the worst possible start by turning up far too late. All bad lads have a hard time getting used to the constant verbal abuse and utter submission required, endless petty rules enforced by instant punishments such as push-ups or chores plus taunting treatment and poor living conditions. Just getting their QM-issue kit is misery when everything that drops is in peril. A mischievous boy without an actual record, the inventor of naked skateboarding (except for a strategically placed sock), came cocky but cracks first and leaves despite an attempt by the new 'mates' to talk him over.
