Maggie thinks Tommy Deakin's stables under the viaduct are to blame. Jerry and Albert go walking on the Pennine Way. Len assures Maggie that the stables are clean as the council sent a rat-catcher round. He wonders why she hasn't forgiven Alf for Mike Ritchie leaving. Elsie knows she's hurting as she feels second best. Rita gets Ernie a job, photographing Terry Slade's strippers but he's not interested, on moral grounds. Albert gets fed up with Jerry's rations and goes off on his own to find a pub. Elsie finds a mouse at No. 11 and discovers, that with Hilda away, Stan's let the back yard become full of rubbish. To prove herself to Ernie, Emily takes on the strippers' assignment. Elsie discovers the binmen aren't calling at No. 13 but Stan refuses to let her inspect his kitchen. Alan thinks she asked him too aggressively. At the Old Nag's Head, Albert tackles a dismissive landlord who is full of praise for Herbert James who does the walk every year.
