After the barrage has passed, nothing remains but heaps of broken stone and dust. But out of a ruined cellar comes "Big Boy," unharmed by the hail of fire that has passed over him. Stanley, a hard-boiled American sergeant, discovers him in time to save him from a bursting shrapnel shell. "Big Boy" is able to return the good deed when two Germans attempt to shoot down the sergeant. Safe in the trenches, the youngster is adopted by the sergeant. But this state of affairs can't last long, for an attack is in progress, and Stanley is ordered to go over the top. Before he goes, he calls in a Red Cross doctor and commits the child to his care. The doctor promises to look out for the infant and Stanley joins his company and goes over the top. He does not come back. The Red Cross worker takes the child, and after the war persuades a war-rich profiteer that it is his duty to adopt one of the many war orphans. The profiteer agrees and, much against his will tells the doctor to "bring the brat in." The orphan is "Big Boy." There are no boy's clothes in the house, so the new arrival is dressed in cast-off clothes of the little daughter of the profiteer. He is a funny looking sight, and a disgusted youngster. "Big Boy" and the little girl soon get into mischief, nearly wrecking one room. The rich man is angered, and starts after the youngster. "Big Boy" finally escapes and runs down the street, still in the girl's garb. He sees a traffic officer, and recognizes him as Stanley, his soldier buddy.
