John Rapley, head of the Associated Baking Companies, has never heard of her, but she is vitally affected by a business coup he executes, thereby raising the price of bread to 6 cents a loaf. The higher price of bread means that Mary cannot buy as many loaves as formerly. She stints herself so that the children won't go hungry. She grows weaker and weaker and is discharged from the factory and replaced by a more-energetic girl. Rapley lavishes gifts on his wife and children, little realizing that he is mainly responsible for the fact that Mary Quinn, mainstay of little Joel and Norah, is starving. One day, outside his bread shop, he finds a girl faint from hunger and ill. She tells him the tragedy of bread at six cents a loaf. Rapley takes care of Mary and the children, and realizing that her plight is but one of the innumerable cases of suffering brought on by his taking advantage of war conditions to clear a big profit, he removes the extra cent on bread.
