George Wharton disappeared, only his hat and coat were found. The police never came across the corpse of the unfortunate. Christopher does not believe the press articles about the death of Wharton. For the service he offers all of his savings. Holmes took the case for the very ambitious, intelligent and loving boy. He learns that Wharton disputes the debt of a man named Jack Driscoll.
