Barbara is in solitary for bringing in drugs, and Vera has the upper hand. Lizzie gets a day out to see her dying brother, escorted by the governor, which coincides with Barbara's hearing. The Roberts struggle with whether her plea should be temporary insanity. Lyn's father visits her and the result is her feeling that her only hope is to get tough.
