Childhood friends Ed Deeves and Ruth Mendoza are in love. Their parents do not approve and have decided to send them away to school. Ed to become a Medical Doctor and Ruth to find "a good Spanish Jew to marry". Ed and Ruth decide to run away. Yet, they want to do it proper without shame on their families so they take the chaperone, Mis' Lyd. The old lady, Mis' Lyd, often pretends sleep to hear Ed and Ruth profess their love, their plans and their future. They spend several days, enjoying the fishing, the camping, and the comradeship. Eventually, they are found out. SPOILER: The fathers and "Mr. Flagger, the Methodist minister, who is a poor preacher but a grand fisherman" show up at the campsite. Through Mis' Lyd's conniving and coaching from the bushes where she hid, it all turns out better than Ed and Ruth could've hoped for. Written by Marshall See less
