He and Ann speculate whether the note could be used as blackmail for Erik's indiscretions, which includes an accusation of murder and a trial, or Ann's murky past which she recalls in flashback but does not share with Erik. They seek advice from local police captain Michael Krasakis. Meanwhile, the situation becomes even more mysterious as the Woolleys and Mervishes also receive the same anonymous notes and nervously arrive at the appointed time to face their blackmailer as a sudden storm rages outside Shepherd's Bar.
