Jack Charleton, one-time rival of Robert for the hand of Bessie, still presses his attentions upon her. Returning home one evening, Robert is injured in an automobile accident. Weeks pass, and we find him wheeled about in an invalid chair. The doctors shake their heads in doubt. Whether he will ever regain control of his limbs is a question. Bessie, worn and tired from nursing Robert, goes to the country for rest. Here Jack Charleton makes his appearance again. He plays upon Robert's weakness, and convinces him that Bessie should be released to marry a man who is not a cripple. Robert arranges with his lawyer for the necessary papers for a divorce and Charleton follows Bessie to the country to press his suit once more. At this point Fate plays a hand. Bessie, who has been listening to the words of Charleton, comes upon the rose she pressed on her wedding day. Memories spring back, and her love for Robert once more outweighs all else. She rushes back home to be at his side. That morning a burglar enters the house. He prepares to leave with a jewel case, but Robert, making an almost superhuman effort to walk, attacks him. Of course, the fight is brief. Robert is overpowered, and left unconscious on the floor. In the struggle, the jewel case has been opened, and in place of the expected jewels it contains the withered leaves of a rose. In a rage, the burglar crumples the flower in his hand and throws it on Robert's unconscious form. As Bessie enters the house, she discovers the body on the floor. She bends over him, and sees these sacred leaves once more. Again her heart fills with love for Robert, a better and a stronger love than she had ever known before. Hereafter her place will be by him, to help, to nourish and to make him strong again, even as her love was made strong by the rose. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
