When the scandal is discovered, Castaigne escapes to America and Morel is left penniless. It is not known that the Count is implicated in the deal, and he agrees to clear Morel of all financial trouble if Lucile will marry him. Lucile becomes the wife of the Count. Three years later, she and her baby are deserted by the Count, who is showering attentions on Irene, Castaigne's sweetheart.
