Harry continues to find his new friend more fascinating, and as the years pass he believes he's in love with clever Dora. But Ruth cannot forget. When she is a young woman she visits Dora, with whom she has sustained friendship. She is convinced that the city girl is only playing with Harry's honest love. Ruth, country-bred but by no means stupid, skillfully arranges things to that Harry starts to suspect the truth. Little by little he reviews the past, and the present appears in a clearer, less-rosy light. He sends Dora a bouquet of flowers and a ring, both imitation, and she reads his meaning: that he has awakened to the fact that her affection for him is also mere imitation.
