Tom and Mugsy are leaders of rival gangs in the Underworld. In a gang fight both are arrested and sent to the reformatory. There their true natures begin to show. Mugsy rapidly goes the downward path among the lower criminals, while Tom is sent, for good behavior, to Hampton Farm. There he is soon on the way to becoming a good and useful citizen. After his release he takes up the study of law, but when Mugsy's term has expired he is arrested as a pickpocket. Jack, a country boy, arrives in the city and after many interesting experiences, decides to join the police force. We see him go through the usual routine and he is assigned to the Detective Squad. Then he is placed on a murder case, the clues of which lead straight to Mugsy's door, and after an exciting chase over the tenement roofs, he is caught. The Bertillon system confirms his guilt and he pays the last penalty for his crime, while Tom marries Nell, his former sweetheart. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
