But the count forces his daughter to marry a wealthy cousin, Prince Ernesto de Redi. Paolo enters the convent. Twenty years pass. Paolo has become a Cardinal and lives in a small country home near Rome with his niece Maria. Princess de Redi lives in a sumptuous palace in Rome with her 20-year-old son, Alberto. Alberto and Maria meet and fall in love. The cardinal discovers their love, and the past comes back to him. He chases Alberto away and forbids Maria from seeing him again. The Pope dies, and Cardinal Ardenti and Prince de Redi, marshal of the conclave, go to Rome. Maria falls ill and Albert threatens to kill himself. The princess pleads their case to the Prince.
