He runs his car off the road, out on a long tree extending over a deep canyon and the two of them are in a sweet fix until Eddie, Jimmie's rival, comes along and rescues them. Eddie tries to drive off with Vera, but Jimmie goes along. He is still in a daze and falls off the car, but falls right back on again. Eddie accuses Jimmie of being a coward. Vera knows that Jimmie isn't and makes a bargain with Eddie. She says she intends to announce her engagement to Jimmie at five o'clock. So Eddie decides to scare Jimmie away from the house in an effort to get her to announce her engagement to him instead, Eddie dons a disguise and goes to Jimmie's office. He warns him to leave town or he will be killed by gunmen. Jimmie gets a bad scare, particularly when he mistakes the end of a gas-pipe in a plumber's bag for a gun. He thinks the gunmen are on his trail and tries to elude them. A man working on one of the street lights drops a huge electric light globe and Jimmie thinks his enemies have set off a bomb. Then a parrot attaches itself to him and the things that parrot says to Jimmie makes him sure he is being constantly followed by the would - be murderers. At Vera's home, everything is ready for the announcement. It is nearly five o'clock. Eddie is waiting, confident that he has run Jimmie out of town. Jimmie sneaks into the basement, gets into the heating pipes and sees what is going on. Then Jimmie pulls Eddie into the register, steals his trouser and locks him in the furnace. With his rival disposed of, Jimmie slips an engagement ring on Vera's finger while both of them watch Jimmie blow heart-shaped smoke rings. Written by Press Sheet from Library of Congress See less
