Madge, his wife, brings him to a realization of the necessity of working by cracking him on the head with a plate. He goes to work in the streets to open the sewers clogged by the floods. Rube and a co-worker are laboring diligently when their attention is directed to a pedestrian who hesitates on the sidewalk, afraid to tackle the flood running in the street. For a money consideration Rube and his helper agree to carry the pedestrian across. When they have him at about the center of the torrent, they sight a young woman who does not wish to get wet by wading the stream. Rube dashes to her assistance, rescues a truant shoe which has floated away in the stream, then carries her safely across. Rube's wife, Madge, prepares his lunch and starts out to carry it to her husband. At the flooded corner she encounters Arthur, who carries her to safety. They proceed to a dry place, where they sit down on a bench and start to eat the lunch. Meanwhile Rube and the young Jady, who is Arthur's wife, become better acquainted and find a seat around the corner from Madge and Arthur, friendship developing with surprising speed. When Arthur's wife left the house in search of her "meal ticket," a hungry tramp entered in search of food. A borrowing neighbor discovered his presence and summoned the police, who arrive at the house after a speedy and wet trip, to find the intruder locked in the pantry. Suddenly the two couple discover each other's identity, the men escape arm in arm, while the women have a battle. The chase of the men leads the four back to Arthur's home where they discover the police in the act of capturing the tramp. Explanations follow and all is serene.
