Mr. Bloy, the director, has discovered the chief of these malefactors, and has, through the police, obtained his arrest. The prisoner's accomplices have answered this by kidnapping Mr. Bloy's daughter. The unfortunate father has but one hope-Nick Winter's genius. He approaches the detective. The gang is composed of clever rogues, and Nick, if anybody, will be a match for them. Nick Winter begins his campaign by trying to catch the criminals, but, after gaining admission to their den, his presence and identity are discovered, and he is the victim of foul play. Thrown into a cellar, he is released, helpless and bound, to be taken to the riverside. He suddenly regains consciousness, overpowers his captor, and pushes him into the river, after placing in the man's breast pocket his own papers of identity. The next morning, all the newspapers give descriptions of the great detective's death. Nick, whom the criminals believe to be dead, takes advantage of their mistake to recommence his efforts to effect their capture. He lays a trap for them, and pushes them firmly and unmercifully towards their doom. Tracked in their last entrenchments (an untenanted small country house), they determine to fight to the last, and Nick has to direct a regular siege to determine a victory in the interests of law and order. The result is obtained after a sharp and prolonged fusillade, and in the end the house has to be blown up by dynamite. Written by Bioscope - August 22, 1912 See less
