Lord Jobs Halsmere, who has befriended Maida, has reasons to believe that some dire peril threatens the girl. Rameses, a seer and hypnotist, is the brother of the woman who is at the head of the Gray Sisterhood. New York papers state that Roger Odell has purchased a rare jewel, a mate of the Eye of Horus, which Miss Maida Odell has as a Heritage from her parents. Lord John is cabled by Mr. Odell, his friend, that one Miss Parsons, is on her way to America, with the jewel and requests Lord John to act as the jewel's guardian until Maida has finished her term with the Gray Sisterhood. Miss Gibson, a maid in the hotel, secretly enters Lord John's room and secures a copy of the cablegram. Lord John, expecting Miss Parson's arrival at the hotel, is alone in his study. He suddenly becomes drowsy; his lungs seem congested. He makes his way to the window and admits the air, and sees a figure disappearing down the side of the house. Paul Teano, private detective, whom Lord John has engaged to assist in the investigation of the Gray Sisterhood, enters. Lord John sends Paul to search for the stranger. The manager enters and informs Lord John that Miss Parsons has arrived seriously ill and has requested to see him. Lord John hastens, only to find her sinking into unconsciousness. He hurries out of the building to find the machine she arrived in; it is disappearing down the road. Lord John pursues in his own machine, after instructing Paul Teano, who had failed to find the stranger, to watch the hotel and detain any suspicious visitors. Lord John overtakes the taxi. He is convinced that the chauffeur is innocent, but upon an examination, discovers a small hole in the back curtain, through which a strange powder evidently has been blown. He gathers up the traces of the powder in his handkerchief and returns to find Paul Teano recovering from a blow. Paul explains that a Gray Sister visited the hotel; that when he attempted to detain her, she struck him and escaped. The two men hasten to Miss Parsons' room, where they are met by the attending physician, who informs Lord John that Miss Parsons is dead. Lord John and Paul hasten to the latter's laboratory, and the strange powder, of which Lord John has also found traces on the windowpane of his own room. A small hole had been bored through the glass. Paul Teano secures a pulmotor and rejoins Lord John, who has determined that the powder is a substance which produces, when inhaled, a state of catalepsy. The pulmotor is applied to Miss Parsons, and she is revived. The Eye of Horus is missing. Lord John interviews the two maids. One is dismissed, but Miss Gibson, whom the manager explains entered his employ but a few days previously, is given the third degree, and finally made to confess, that she purloined the Eye of the Horus. Lord John, not anxious to bring the police into the matter, allows the woman her freedom. The picture dissolves back to Lord John talking to Miss Parsons and shows what must have happened. A certain agent arranged to have someone climb onto the back of Miss Parsons' auto and blow the powder into the machine, at the same time, another unknown person climbed into Lord John's window and sought to overcome him in the same manner, thus facilitating an easy theft of the jewel. Meanwhile Rameses, in company with the Head Sister in the secret room of the Sisterhood, has secured the second Eye of Horus from Maida Odell through his hypnotic influence. We establish the fact that these two jewels have long been guarded by Dr. Rameses as sacred heirlooms of his family and religion. He starts to leave the Sisterhood but is hardly on his road when he sees Lord John approaching. With his two agents, Tony and Leon. Rameses retreats to the underground passage. Lord John follows, while Paul gives chase to the other machine. Lord John is attacked by Tony and Leon. He succeeds in throwing them off and making his way to the secret room, where he confronts Rameses. Lord John manages to tear the Eye of Horus from the Egyptian, but barely escapes being run through by a sharp dirk. Lord John takes the chance to escape, hotly pursued by Tony and Leon. He breaks open a window, clutching the jewels, he jumps, lands safely and makes good his escape. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
