The housemaid with whom Betsy has quarreled sees a letter from Frank disclosing their elopement plans and she shows it to the Judge, who consults with his friend, the Sheriff. They plan to allow the lovers to meet and then nab them. The Judge escorts his daughter to the masque ball from which Frank had planned to elope with Betsy, while the sheriff "shadows" Frank. He is delayed on the road and "Gasoline Pete," the hobo chauffeur, wanders into the ballroom. He is mistaken for Frank, who had mentioned he was going to the ball in tramp costume. Pete decides to carry out the joke. Betsy nods to him in a "follow me" manner, and they have no sooner departed, than the real Frank arrives, dressed as a hobo. The Judge stops and stares in amazement. The Sheriff is equally puzzled and while they are arguing, Frank sees Pete and the girl in her father's auto. Realizing something is wrong, he speeds after the fleeing couple in his car, the Sheriff and Judge following in a carriage. Meanwhile, Betsy discovers who her companion is. Frank catches up to them. "Gasoline Pete" explains the mistake, tells Betsy to jump in Frank's machine and get married, while he covers their escape. Shortly afterwards, Pete allows the Judge and Sheriff to catch him. Frank and Betsy, now married arrive at court in time to prevent the tramp's incarceration. The Judge makes the best of it and, laughing heartily at the disgusted Sheriff, gives the young couple his blessing. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
