It's not about claiming that "all men are selfish" -- rather, it reflects a truth about male nature. A man feels responsible for ensuring his wife's happiness and at least a comfortable life for his sisters. When faced with circumstances beyond his control -- such as a wife's illness or a sister's financial hardship that an honest working man cannot overcome -- he feels a deep sense of guilt, which may sometimes express itself as aggression. It is important that everyone, especially women, understand the real meaning of this proverb. In William Saroyan's play, this theme is portrayed with a light touch, seen through the eyes of a child trying to bring together a family that is beginning to fall apart under financial strain.
