He comes back to the humdrum country town and finally is placed in a position of trust in the bank. When one of the gay companions of his ill-spent college days comes that way, they review their past in the old way, and Bob is influenced to seek the excitements of the great white way in the big city. In order to secure the money for this adventure, he pockets the funds of the bank and becomes a fugitive from justice. He goes down and down in the scale of humanity until he reaches the scum line of hobo-dom. Weary of the husks, the shell of his former self, he rides the trucks back to his old home, to find his indulgent parents, himself a stranger, broken, disgraced, and despised.
