She works in a country store. Her salary is small. There is a secret in Mary's life; her husband is serving a prison sentence. This causes the villagers to snub Mary. Only one champions her cause, the new manager of the store where Mary works. He secretly loves her. Mary reads of the wonders performed by a famous surgeon and takes the boy to him. He agrees to cure him, but the figure asked is far beyond Mary's means. Mary is brought into constant temptation by the sight of money in the store. One evening she returns to find the drawer containing a large sum of money. She takes it. William Rogers, the manager, sees the theft. At home that night she proceeds to go through the nightly spelling lesson with her crippled son. The little fellow places the speller in her lap, points to a word and asks her what it is. Mary looks at the speller. The word before her spells "thief." She resolves to replace the money. As she prepares to return to the office she does not know that she has been watched through the window by her husband. He has escaped from prison and fled for protection to his home. As Mary leaves the house he confronts her. He tells her he must have money. She denies that she has any. He tears the money from her and continues his flight. Before he has proceeded far he is shot down and killed by prison guards. Rogers, lingering at the office, bears the shots and runs to the riverbank to investigate. He finds a rowboat drawn up containing Joe's dead body, the stolen bills clutched in his band. Mary runs through the group of villagers and comes face to face with her dead husband. As she falls at his side her eyes fall upon the stolen hills. The villagers naturally suppose the escaped convict to be the thief. Rogers does not disillusion them, but takes Mary home and marries her. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
