Ann he had sent into the house, and the cowboy about his business; but so annoyed was he at the latter that it took but a few words, when he later met Jack at the corral, to bring on a quarrel. The boys stepped between them, however, when guns were drawn, and insisted that they fight with their fists. Had Joe proven the victor, the matter might have been dropped, but to be gotten the best of by one of his father's cowboys, was too humiliating, so at the son's suggestion, Jack was told by the old man that he might go. This, the elder Samson emphasized still more, when he beheld Jack telling his daughter good-bye, while Joe, his pride still wounded, mounted his horse and rode after the cowboy, determined to have their fight out with guns. From the door, Ann beheld her brother's action, and shrewdly guessing the cause, ran for her horse, and hurried after the pair. However, she did not overtake them until Joe had succeeded in forcing Jack to a duel, by striking the cowboy in the face with his hat, and the men were on the point of firing; at this instant, a shot was heard from behind, and as the men turned in surprise, they beheld a band of hostile Indians who had stolen upon them unawares. Seeing that the other's exit was cut of, Ann quickly wheeled her horse to go for aid, and although a few of the Indians gave chase, she reached the ranch in safety. Then with her father and the boys, she started on a wild race to the rescue of her brother and sweetheart, who entrenched side by side behind a rock, were keeping the Indians somewhat at bay, and ere the redskins could close in upon them, the rescue party dashed down the hill, scattering the Indians, and not only bringing about a reconciliation between Jack and the Samsons, but also to complete Ann's happiness, welcoming him into the family as a prospective brother and son-in-law.
