They have not proceeded far on the journey when much to their dismay their machine breaks down for lack of fuel. While Arthur Crosby is absent endeavoring to find water for the car, an escaped convict appears and at pistol-point compels Mrs. Crosby to part with some of her external clothing. Enveloped in this he takes possession of the car and proceeds to enjoy a little ride. Soon he encounters Arthur Crosby returning with a pail of water and again the convict uses his adroitness and at pistol-point he obliges innocent Arthur to change suits with him. He appears clothed in the garb of civilization--and best of all, in his pocket he finds Arthur's address cards and his house keys, and he hurries to the Crosby residence. Meanwhile a reward for the capture of an escaped convict has been publicly posted in the city, and poor Arthur wearing the suit of one is in danger of arrest and imprisonment--until he explains the tragic circumstance in which he finds himself placed. The convict is hungry and virtually without money, for Arthur has little in his clothing; so when he gets to the Crosbys' he makes up a package of food and silverware, then spies out the land with a view to securing more bounty on his return. But his opportunity and liberty are short-lived: Arthur, his friend, and some police officers jump into an auto and race to the house, arriving just in time to recapture the convict.
