Escaping from the ghetto, Eva and Irene initially use the names of Katarzyna and Elzbieta. They make their way from a forced-labor collection point to a machine factory in the German Ruhr. Forced to move again, they assume new identities, finally arriving at a vineyard in the Rhine Valley and a boat that will take them all the way to the Swiss border.
