He is in the contracting business, as is also Hubert Forrest, Cecile's father. Santley asks Cecile to marry him, but she only laughs. He tells her that he has hopes of obtaining a contract for a big job. Forrest overhears this. Dorothy, Cecile's sister, is secretly in love with Santley, who scarcely notices her. Forrest tells Cecile that if she will pretend great interest in Santley's plans and give him an opportunity of seeing them, he will give her a diamond bracelet. Cecile accordingly phones Santley that she would like to see the plans. He is overjoyed, brings them to her. While they are looking at them Cecile pretends to faint, and Santley carries her out into the garden. Dorothy meantime has hidden in an alcove adjoining the library and is astonished to see her father come in, gather up the papers and take them to his room. Sensing that her lover is being duped, she enters her father's room and demands the papers. He vainly tries to make her leave. When she sees that her father intends looking at the papers she picks them all up and rushes to the window, which she breaks with her bare hands, calling to Santley. Santley has become suspicious, and he rushes into the house, followed by Cecile. The papers are scattered over the floor. When Santley reaches down to pick them up he notices that some of them are covered with blood. He then sees that Dorothy's hands are bleeding profusely. The father is all contrition, thinking that he has been the means of causing her to be injured, but Dorothy recovers, and Santley procures the contract, and now realizes that he loves Dorothy, who has risked so much for him.
