They presented a document, connected with the factory in which she had just inherited a half-interest, and asked her to sign it. Having no special interest in the matter, she quickly complied, not knowing that she was working into the hands of schemers by signing a petition against any change being made in the existing factory regulations, which compelled the hands to work 10 hours. That night, the committee of three called on the other owner, Philip Barton, and secured his signature to a similar document. Though co-partners, the young people didn't know each other. Also that night, learning of Miss Marsh's arrival, Maggie Murphy decided to make an effort to see the young lady and tell her of the factory hands' troubles. Bravely she made her way to the house, gained an interview, and told such an interesting story that Miss Marsh decided to go to the young girl's home. The conditions of poverty which she found there, and the additional stories she heard, caused her to make a grave decision. Disguising herself in poor clothes, she applied for employment in her own factory, posing as a cousin of the Murphy family. During her first day, visitors were suddenly announced and there was a wild scramble to get the small children out of sight. Barton decided to inspect his factory, and while he was making the rounds a fire broke out. Thanks to him, the women and children were rescued; he even went back into the building to carry out crippled Tim and then "Lizzie Murphy"--the name Miss Marsh had assumed. After the fire, Barton searched high and low for her, without success. Realizing the genuine ills of the factory workers, Miss Marsh decided to make real changes and started in by giving them a lawn party. As Barton was there, she slipped on the old factory clothes over her dress, and allowed him to discover her. When Hyde and Burns appeared on the scene, however, they were informed that an entirely new plan had been evolved, and that in future the partners would manage the factory personally.
