While returning to his hut on a lonely stretch of coast, chance makes him a gift; he finds a girl, just blooming into womanhood, unconscious upon the rocks. He takes her to his cabin. She regains consciousness. The man has returned to the beach to make his boat fast. He finds that the receding tide has carried it away, and when he carries the news to her that she is marooned, all the fear that a girl can entertain for a crude man rises in her. He assures her, takes his blankets and leaves the hut. Gradually the girl comes to see the man beneath the clothes and he comes to love the woman for herself alone. His only thought is for her convenience and safety. When he returns to the beach the incoming tide has returned his boat. He goes to her and tells her that she may now return. She tells him that she would rather remain there until her injuries have entirely healed. He is pleased at this, but almost immediately learns that her lameness is only an affectation, and he sadly takes the crutches from her and is hurt at the idea that she does not trust him. Then she tells him her story. She was a stenographer, and her employer made improper advances toward her, which she resented and aroused his anger. He concocted a plot against her. Frightened, she escaped through the window. On the beach she found a fisherman's boat, and in this she escaped from the indignity and injustice which was awaiting her. And then the fisherman found her upon the rocks. The man is touched by her story and as the picture fades out, he places a ring on her finger. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
