The dream of ...See moreEdwin Gordon, an artist, loves Alice Eggleston, his model, but he is poor and loves her in silence. She is a beautiful young woman, but is unaware of the passion of her employer and is much sought after by other admirers. The dream of Edwin is shattered when she leaves him for Ralph Gray, a debonair man of the world, who sees in Alice only her beauty and charm. They marry and a child is born to them. Edwin, unable to remain in a locality that has been the scene of his one great sorrow, leaves and pursues his art in a distant city. He prospers and becomes prominent. He is given a commission to decorate a fashionable church and paints beautiful pictures on the windows. While at work an inspiration comes to him and he paints a picture of the Madonna and her child. He remembers, and in his sorrow uses his brushes deftly and the result is a strikingly faithful likeness of his lost sweetheart, Alice, holding in her arms a child. In the meantime Alice has been deserted by Gray and wanders away from her native city. She is in destitute circumstances and seeks refuge in the church and there finds her portrait painted on the window. She intuitively knows that there is but one man in the world who could paint the picture and she seeks him out with the result that they find happiness at last.
