Her uncle, a rich miner, sends to her father $20,000 for Ada in order to avoid the inheritance tax. The father, fearing for his daughter's welfare, engages Graves to find her. Ada secures employment as stenographer in Graves's office through an old friend. The father sends Ada's photograph to Graves. She receives the photograph and changes it, placing another girl's photo in the mailer. Meanwhile Graves' partner, Hastings, has become smitten with Ada, thinking, perhaps, he could use her as one of his tools in some deal. Ada despises him, however. He sees the photograph which Ada has changed on Graves' desk, and knowing the owner of the photograph, connives with her to pretend that she is the original of the photograph in order to get the $20,000. Graves, who plays the stocks, is losing heavily when the clerk from the broker's office appears and demands more money. Hastings and the adventuress arrive to claim the $20,000. Ada tells Graves she is an impostor, but Graves says she is the owner of the photograph and is just about to open the safe and give them the money when Ada tells him it is in the outer office. She rushes out, fills an envelope with paper, gives it to Graves, who gives the package of paper to the conspirators. Ada's father, who has received a telegram saying that his daughter had been found, goes to Graves' office and to his utter amazement, finds that the young woman is not his daughter. The broker's clerk calls for more money. Ada gives him the $20,000, which is hers, and he leaves. Ada's father upbraids Graves and gives him one hour to find her, with the alternative of going to jail. The broker's clerk returns and tells Graves that he has won with the $20,000 margin furnished by Ada. Graves calls Ada. She tells him she is Meade's daughter.
