He enters a village at nightfall, and sees through a lighted window a woman and her lover. He learns that the woman has a husband. He saves the husband from killing himself, as he is about to yield to his despair over the loss of his wife's affection. He meets the lover on his way from the woman, and persuades him to write a promise not to see her anymore. He then visits the wife, and finds her writing a farewell to her husband. He talks with her, but cannot dissuade her from her purpose. At last he changes the notes, so that the farewell shall be received by the lover, who goes away.
