However at the hearing in front of the judge, they are also possibly going to charge him for manslaughter, the judge just waiting for the conclusion of an investigation of the pedestrian who was run over and killed just before Jerry was stopped. Jerry's parents testify about how conscientious he was as a child about pedestrian and cycling safety, although they can't attest to his driving. Jerry's friend Nick, who was in the car with him, testifies about Jerry's general sportsmanship, especially demonstrated by something he did at a recent track meet. And another of Jerry's friends, Nancy, also in the car at the time, tells about that specific drive and that she never feels unsafe in his car in his driving skill. Conversely, the police officers tell of Jerry's chronic speeding in they having given him previous warnings about it, and they overhearing him talk about what they consider his inflated view of his own driving and not even wanting to learn defensive driving skills. While they don't deny that Jerry may be conscientious in other areas of his life, the police have witnessed that he seems to have a different view when he is "borrowing the power" of an automobile. While no one in the room was at the hit-and-run when the pedestrian was killed with the possible exception of Jerry, Nancy, and Nick, none of the three can honestly or conclusively say that he didn't hit him as Jerry did run over "something". Regardless of the outcome of the investigation and the hearing, Jerry will have to reflect on everything that has been said about him and his driving. Written by Huggo See less
