Agnes, 23, walks the rugged, narrow path; teenage Adele travels the broad, flowery one. Agnes loves, with a pure and innocent love, Sidney, a young man of good appearance, but not an over-abundance of good within him. One night in the club Sidney has a quarrel over cards with human vulture McWeeny, who threatens to get even for an insult. Later, when Agnes is out one day with Sidney, he meets Dick, a good friend, on the street. Sidney introduces Agnes to him and after some little talk they pass on. One day Adele comes home with a beautiful silk dress and a new hat and Agnes, being surprised, asks where she got them, realizing that her income would not warrant purchasing such expensive clothes, but Adele refuses to tell. The next night Adele dresses in the new clothes and goes. Agnes' suspicion is aroused, and she follows and sees Adele meet McWeeny and taken away in a taxi. Agnes being desperate, takes another taxi and follows, and sees Adele driven up to a large apartment building and taken within by McWeeny. She alights, and after some hesitancy, she runs up the steps and enters. This is all seen by Dick, who telephones to Sidney at the club, telling him that his girl has gone into McWeeny's apartments. Sidney leaves the club at once. McWeeny, having taken all methods of precautions to see that they are not disturbed, anticipates a great time with Adele, and they are about to drink their wine when a commotion in the reception room disturbs them. Adele hears her sister arguing with the butler for admittance, and begs McWeeny to hide her, who quickly tells her to take her hat and coat and go home by a back way. Agnes finally brushes the butler aside and comes in the room expecting to see Adele. McWeeny pleads innocence, but the presence of two wine glasses half empty convinces Agnes that her sister is about and she says she will wait there until he gives Adele up, taking off her coat and hat. Agnes finally pleads with McWeeny, and is in a pleading position before McWeeny when Sidney dashes into the room and is horrified. McWeeny grasping the situation, fulfills his threat by saying Agnes has been forcing her attentions on him to take her home. He does so and the circumstances having been so convincing, he refuses to believe her. Agnes tells him that she was after her sister, who McWeeny has concealed, but when they get home Adele is in bed and Sidney leaves for good. Agnes is now broken and broods over it so much, she enters a convent. Later Sidney learns the truth and goes to take Agnes from the convent, but goes away empty as her soul has now sought refuge in God and she has offered up her hopes on the altar of sacrifice, an innocent martyr, leaving nothing but white ashes, the aroma of which constitutes the atmosphere breathed by those having entered the joys of their Lord.
