After the announcement of their spontaneous marriage, it wasn't just the Wartenborgs who were amazed. Marie's mother Hanna also panics because she has to confess to her daughter that she had an affair with Max's father Julius von Wartenborg 20 years ago: Marie married her half-brother. Shortly afterwards, Max dies under tragic circumstances. Julius' wife Alexa and the imperious patriarch Johannes von Wartenborg blame Marie. Disappointed, she withdraws from her noble relatives and also from her mother. By working in Franz Leitner's crystal cutting factory - the von Wartenborgs' competitor - Marie recovers from the severe blow of fate. Julius, who has now realized that Hanna is the true love of his life, seeks contact with his illegitimate daughter.
