He started by reading his poetry in one of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas' salons in 1930s Paris. In the 40's he was associated with Rene Magritte Marcel Duchamp, Jean-Paul Sartre, Henry Miller and Jean Genet. In the 50's he was a contemporary of Allen Ginsberg, Paul Bowles and William S.
