Meanwhile a woman arrives in town with a baby and seeing the notice hides the baby. Babe and Kate find the motherless child and decide to take it home. The Women's League in a body visits Kate's home, to protest against further love-making in Cordeliaville. Babe is at the house when they arrive and they find a sheepish expression on his face which perhaps is explained when the new-found baby begins to cry. The scandal is worse than if a murder had been committed in the village of Cordeliaville, and it takes many an explanation and unlooked for circumstance to -straighten out the mix-up.
