However, Ralph says that he bought the camera himself, something that Jack doesn't understand how he ...See moreHigh school student Jack admires his friend Ralph's new camera, and would like his father to buy him one like Ralph's father did for him. However, Ralph says that he bought the camera himself, something that Jack doesn't understand how he could do in Ralph having the same income of allowance and money from a part-time job as him. Ralph tells him that he set himself a weekly budget, and although wasn't always able to adhere to it on his set path, which he mapped out on a graph to make it easier to visualize, he saved enough money close to his goal time to buy the camera. He is now doing the same so that he can buy a tripod. Jack knows what a budget is in that he recently saw his parents', it which includes income as money coming in, and known expenses, categorized amounts for optionals, and contingency for emergencies as actual or possible money going out. Jack doesn't know if he can set let alone stick to a budget to buy that camera he wants, especially as he really likes his daily ice cream sundaes. In trying it out, Jack will find that he has to make decisions on what is most important in terms of his spending, that there are sometimes other ways getting around having to spend money, and that sometimes it is worth spending money on something good as opposed to spending money on something that will break easily resulting in him having to spend even more money in the long run.
