Jeff's ideal is to be popular, which he believes is helped by driving - father promising to lend him the family car to drive to the dance, with his ultimate goal to have a fancy car of his own - dressing sharply, and having a well liked girl like June on his arm for the evening. His role model is who he considers the most popular person at school, Ed Anderson, the captain of the football team. At the last minute, Jeff's father has to renege on his promise of the car in needing it himself for an emergency. Rather than take public transit to school as his father suggests, Jeff, believing that going to the dance on the bus would make him less popular especially to June, instead calls her to cancel the date by saying that he isn't feeling well. In the aftermath of this lie, Jeff is forced to reflect on the ideals behind his goal of being popular, and whether superficial things like a fancy car, nice clothes, and being with popular people is inherently what makes his parents, June and Ed well liked i.e. popular.
