Ruth leaves the warm farmhouse and goes back to her cold, cheerless abode, where she places all the available covering over the baby. That night was the coldest the village had ever known, and the next morning, a neighbor entering the house, finds the young mother dead, having succumbed to the cold, but the baby is alive. The neighbor carries the baby to Mrs. Mackey and she gladly welcomes it into her home, but her husband tells her that "either her father or the baby will have to go." The old man hears this and gladly sacrifices himself for the baby. The selfish man's awakening comes when he sees the old man leaving the only home he has, and running after him, begs him to come back, assuring him that the baby can remain, too.
