An adventuress named Dado Scholl hears of their marriage and swears revenge on Swayne, with whom she is in love. Davidson, a young fellow of about Frances' age and a great friend of Swayne's, loses all of his money at the gaming table; Swayne decides to give him a home to help him get on his feet again. Under the same roof now and mutually attracted to each other, Davidson and Frances become lovers. During a quarrel between Swayne and Davidson, Swayne is shot and Davidson is arrested for the crime. But the valet confesses that he shot his master at Dado's request; Swayne dies, content in the knowledge that Frances' future is safe in the hands of Davidson.
